SIR RASHBEHARI GHOSH
A renowned Indian politician, lawyer and a social worker, Sir Rashbehari Ghosh was born on 23rd December 1845 in the village of Torkona of Khandaghosh in Burdwan. Rashbehari Ghosh was educated at Burdwan Raj Collegiate School. Passing the entrance examination, he entered the prestigious Presidency College, Calcutta and achieved a degree I Masters in English. In the year 1871, he passed the Law Examination with Honours and in 1884,, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws. His close association with the University of Calcutta , made him a responsible member of the syndicate from the year 1887 to 1889. Soon he found his true calling in the nation’s struggle for independence. He was greatly inspired by Gokhale’s political ideas and supported Gokhale’s scheme of compulsory primary education. He became a member of the Indian National Congress and was inclined towards the moderate wing. His first important appearance in politics was in 1905, when he presided over a meeting in the Calcutta Town Hall to protest against the offensive comments of Lord Curzon at the convocation ceremony held in the University of Calcutta. Incidentally he became the President of the Congress for the annual sessions in 1907 and in 1908. He took a prominent position in the Swadeshi movement. He looked upon Swadeshi movement as a means for fostering indigenous industries.
About Sir Rashbehari Ghosh Mahavidyalaya
Sir Rashbehari Ghosh Mahavidyalaya is a relatively new educational institution , which is located at some 20 kms away from the main town of Burdwan. It was out of the ardent and dedicated zeal of the educationists in the region and also necessity of higher educational institution for the local and surrounding people, that the College was established in the year 2010. The College stands on a calm and quite place encompassed by lush green natural boundaries. The College campus is spread over 17 acres of green landscape and after overcoming initial hurdles of financial assistance, the College is able to cater to the higher educational needs of the students of the region.
Welcome you all to Sir Rashbehari Ghosh Mahavidyalaya, a very young but quite promising and blooming College which is situated in the Khandaghosh block of South Damodar region of Burdwan district. It was established as a Govt. aided College in the year 2010 with the capital of 57 students only in its General Courses in Bengali, English, Sanskrit and History from the Academic Session 2010-2011. Then from the next session the Honours Courses were introduced. Now we are gradually growing and have almost 600 students in six Honours subjects (Bengali, English, History, Political Science, Philosophy and Sanskrit) in Arts Faculty along with seven General Subjects ( Bengali, English, Education, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sanskrit) . This College had been named after, world’s one of the best and renowned advocate, Sir Rashbehari Ghosh. It is our earnest endeavor to reach his excellence. Though we yet not have sufficient infrastructure and wealth to provide better facilities to our students but still we provide maximum effort possible to enrich our students intellectually.
